Emsworth Square has always been the centre of activity in the town, with many houses and busy shops clustered round The Square. Every year on 18 July a fair was held in The Square. People came from around the area including the local mountebanks (swindlers or sellers of patent medicines), leaders of dancing bears and owners of Punch and Judy shows.

The one sideshow at the fair which lingered longest in Emsworth’s memory appears to have been the skeleton of a whale through which visitors could walk from mouth to tail!
